She hadn't meant to do it. She didn't mean to do a lot of things. Still, they were done. You couldn't change the past, people said, so there was no use moping over it.
So why did she feel like she needed to?
Lilith wandered aimlessly around the hallways, the first day's classes come and gone. As usual the teachers hated when you "accidentally" chucked your pencil across the room (it had ACTUALLY been an accident, by the way) and they seemed to notice even when you slouched in the back of the room and tried your hardest to be invisible. The smaller class sizes didn't help with that, either. She paced around the corridors as she thought, frustration already leaking into every possible pore of her body. Fuckin' why? Why had this had to happen in their family? Right now, she really just wanted to be home, where she could sleep during the day and be awake at night like a normal person, and where she was around people who didn't expect her to be 'intelligent'. She wasn't a fuckin' genius. She was a lazyass who would probably never get a good job. The reality of it was stark today.
And she couldn't even get along with her own roommate in this place. Go fuckin' figure.
"Hey." She turned around, staring back down the hallway she'd just passed through. There, leaning up against a wall, was her brother. Dominic. "You look like someone who could use some cheering up." He held up a little box, a gentle smile on his face. "I brought you cake - it's your favorite." She really wanted to glare at him. She really, really did... but he knew she couldn't resist cake.
"Chocolate?" she asked, trying her best to still look totally unconvinced. He nodded, and gave the box a little shake to tease her further. "Oh, a'right. C'mere and give it t' me, I'm starved on this school food anyhow." He merely grinned a little more and turned, causing her to scowl after him. "Oi, wassa big idea?"
"What idea?" Nic looked bemused. Lilith just glared at him, and he couldn't help a little laugh. "Oh, come on now. You know I wouldn't just bring you cake and let you walk away." She grumbled something under her breath, which sounded like a couple of colorful words per usual, but for once Nic decided to pretend as though he couldn't hear her. "Come on - I know a nice little spot where we can go." She still looked as gloomy and doubtful as before, and he tried to smile even more, for her. "It's quiet - I promise."
She gave in eventually, and let Nic lead her around the hallways, until they reached one along one of the walls. It had big windows put all around, and it faced the courtyard so that you could see it perfectly. Normally sunlight would be streaming in at what would likely have seemed a little blinding for Lilith, but at this time of day the sun faced the other way, and the entire corridor was shaded.
"Okay, a'right," Lilith said to him, chuckling despite herself. "I admit, this place's pretty spiff." She sat down and leaned against a wall, staring through the window outside as Nic slid down next to her.
"I told you." He popped open the box, in which sat a nice-sized slice of a rich-looking chocolate cake, and two forks. Lilith scowled again upon seeing a pair of utensils, since - of course - it meant she had to share. "Don't worry, I only want a couple bites this time." Lilith rolled her eyes at him.
"That's what you said last time."
"Well, I'm your brother. It's my job to keep you on your toes." With that he took the first bite of cake, to which Lilith protested by taking a ridiculously large stab on her own fork. Nic patted her back a couple times while she hacked (he had plenty of experience with this, sadly enough) and then insisted that if she didn't eat slower, he'd have to take it away. She responded be assaulting the poor pastry viciously once more.
It was an odd sort of interchange, between the two siblings - but neither one of them would trade a moment like it for the world. After all, whether they really knew it or not, they needed each other more deeply than anything else.
