Kari's math homework laid in a forgotten heap, and would certainly not be touched for a while. His professor seemed to think that his after school hours should be spent doing MORE work (what? no.), but Kari had much better ideas. He'd gotten himself entirely moved into his room, and had decided it was about time to cook himself some dinner.
He left the door open, secretly hoping that the smell of melted butter and cheese would attract people so that he wouldn't have to eat all the tilapia by himself. Zeke couldn't eat this stuff, or wouldn't, at least, and the recipe was for four. Since he couldn't really break one fourth of an egg, he figured four was the best he could do.
He'd just finished... well... battering, sort of, the tilapia, and had thrown them onto his left self-heating skillet, and was moving over to the top of his mini-fridge which he was using as an impromptu counter. He had a salad in the works there, and had some serious whisking to do.

Nic was a foodie.
It wasn't that he enjoyed eating, even though it was nice to taste various things that your or others you knew had made - it was the creation he enjoyed. The ascertainment of something new. He was all about learning new things, and cooking was a constant form of creation, adaptation, and discovery. So it was that when he was on his way back to his dorm from the library he.. he couldn't help but stop and savor the smells that were wafting around the halls. Well now, how in the world was it that he could be smelling food all the way up on this floor? The kitchen was downstairs, on the other side of the castle...
Curiosity got the better of him. He followed the smell, navigating the hallway slowly, until he came to an open door. Yep, yep - it was definitely in there. He hesitated at the entrance, not wanting to wander in uninvited. That was rude, after all. He'd leave that sort of thing up to his sister. Hell knew she would do it in a heartbeat...
Knock knock. He tapped on the frame of the door, hovering outside, the curiosity almost unbearable. They were cooking in there? How, why, what? Questions abounded, and he couldn't wait to find the answers.

Kari was finding himself in the pleasant maze of cooking multi tasking as he tried to keep an eye on the browning tilapia at the same time he poured half a dozen ingredients (sesame and poppy seeds, onion, paprika, white wine and cider vinegar, olive oil, a touch of sugar, the usual) in a bowl and whisked like his life depended on it. He held the bowl with one hand as he licked his fingers then quickly flipped the almond coated tilapia in the skillet. It was at this moment of cooking glory that he heard a tap on the door frame. He figured it was Zeke.
"C'mon in," he called out. He probably would have dressed up a bit more had he thought that he was actually going to have company. It had been a pipe dream, and he knew it, so all he was wearing was his green bow top, the one with the sleeves, which he had pulled back a bit since he was, you know, cooking, and his casual "any shorter and it would be illegal" white shorts, because what was the point of a room if not to be comfortable in?
Kari was quickly running out of arms, and wasn't used to such a small work place, so he just stuck the handle of the spatula in his mouth and went back to whisking.

Ah, an invitation! Well, he was more than glad to accept it, as he moved into the room and... and... dear god. That was.. that was a.. The instinct to run was definitely there, but he tried to fight against it. After all, i-it would be impolite to just... go tearing out of there as though hell itself had opened up in front of him. It was just.. shocking. He braced himself for females elsewhere - class, halls, outside. It was when they caught him unawares, and in such close, empty, and... exclusive quarters that it really began to freak him out.
"I... wha... you..." Oh he really needed to be more literate than that, but his tongue was all tied up around itself. What to do, what to do.. quick Nic, think fast! "Eeerrr... what are you.." Oh Nic. That wasn't quick thinking. That was barely thinking at all. "Th-this is the boy's..."

"Mmph?" said Kari, not looking up. The stammering made him think it was Zeke even more, until he realized that wasn't his voice. Only then did he bother looking up from his whisking. He blinked at the new stammerer, then decided his whisking was done and set the bowl down. He flipped the rest of the tilapia while he responded to the question he was beginning to get used to.
"Aaand, I am a boy." He wasn't even wearing a skirt this time. Was it the pigtails or the pink toenails? He faced the boy, waving him in. "One hundred percent boy. ...Well, at least like seventy, right?" he added with a giggle, tapping his flat chest. No need for bras if he was just lurking in his room. "I'm Kari Trueman, by the way pleased to meet you," he added as he grabbed the bowl with spinach, toasted almonds, and cranberries he'd prepared earlier. "There's gonna be four servings here, so, uh, if you'd like to... try some," he said awkwardly. He had been hoping for girls, sure, but he wouldn't say no to anyone at this point.

A... boy? Oh. ...OH. A boy! She-HE was a boy! O-okay... okay. He could deal with this. It was a little disorienting still, but he'd be okay. He'd be ooookay. ...wouldn't he?
"Ah! M-my apologies, m-SIR," he corrected himself quickly, fiddling his hands together nervously. "Sir." At least he didn't seem offended in any manner - that was good. He'd just been thrown off, after all, but the.. pigtails, and what he was wearing. At first look, he really did SEEM female.. hrrr. Disorienting. "Dominic Andraste - charmed to meet you as well." He hesitated a moment as he considered offering his hand to shake, but Kari seemed to have his hands full. Nic settled for raising his hand in a little gesture, before letting it drop again.
"Ah, really?" The mention of food did sound good... he'd not had anything to eat for awhile, after all. He'd been too busy studying an astrology book he'd discovered in the library. "I wouldn't want to impose, though.. I just caught the scent out in the hall and was curious as to how you were cooking up here - what equipment, what you were making, how you got supplies - you know, basics." ..well it was basic to him, at least.

Kari gave him an amused look. "Don't over-do it. I know I look like a girl. Are you seeing my room?" He gestured with his head towards the intensly pink everything that covered his side of the room.
Kari turned down the heat and sprinkled some cheese over the tilapia, then covered it and seemed content to let it sit. Then he got back to work on the salad. "It's no problem; I made enough for a group since I wanted to use all of the tilapia at once. Plus, I was... kind of hoping the smell would attract people," he admitted.
Kari gave him a funny look, one that sort of said 'what planet are you from,' but deigned to answer anyway. "They call them hot pots or something, I think. It's like one little stove burner that you can plug into a wall. I've got a toaster oven too, and various pots and pans. I got them from my dad... Kari Trueman? My daddy owns Truer Foods. S'not exactly hard to get, you know, food equipment. And I'm making Almond-Crusted Tilapia and Cranberry Spinach Salad!" he added happily as he poured the dressing over the salad, then snapped on a tupperware lid and shook like his life depended on it. "I've got a pull out table we can use if you give me a sec," he added.

Indeed, Nic could see his room. It was... pink. Pink was an excellent word for it. Well, not to say that pink was exclusively a girl's color, but more often than not, it was. He tilted his head a little bit as he listed to Kari, before he spoke.
"I see - looking to meet someone new, I presume?" It was the beginning of the school year, after all. It seemed a good idea, since a common notion was that 'the way to one's heart is through their stomach'. While he didn't exactly agree with the notion in whole, he wasn't going to deny that it didn't help, at least a little. He listened with interest as Kari explained, and he became even more enthralled with the revelation of this new boy's identity. "Trueman, indeed! Yes, I know that name, it's no wonder you have all this then." Aah, things made sense. He just loved when things made sense. "All I have in my own dorm is a sad little toaster, unfortunately." His poor, trusty toaster. It was on it's last legs, he feared.
"As for what your cooking - it sounds divine. Do you, uh, you need any help with anything?" Wow, he shook that container, didn't he? ..wow.

"Salad's done!" Kari announced cheerfully after he'd finished brutally shaking the tupperware container. "Let's give the cheese a bit more time to melt, though." He glanced around, having once again run out of places to put stuff, and in the end, just plopped the tupperware into Nic's hands, pausing to make sure the boy wasn't going to drop it before skipping over to his drawers, moving a few things, then pulling out the pull-out table at the top, just below the very top and above the actual drawers.
"I wish they gave us a little bit more space," he confessed as he pulled his desk chair to the table. "But I'm making due. Just put the salad on the table for now," he added, pulling out a drawer from the counter where he was cooking and retrieving some intensly fancy plastic plates and silverware. "Easier to wash," he admitted, plopping them on the table before running back to his tilapia. "You can go ahead and sit down," he informed Nic, gesturing over his shoulder to the desk chair. "I'll sit on the bed. Mmm, cheese," he added as he uncovered the tilapia. ((It's kind of unclear SO BAM I drew you a picture.))

And then there was tupperware. He stared at it for a second, as though it were some piece of alien matter, and then followed Kari over to the table where he could set it down. He listened, still with curiosity, as Kari continued to talk.
"I dunno," he admitted as he set down the container that held the salad. "The small space is sort of comforting." He'd always liked small spaces, though - perhaps it was just him. He turned to watch Kari for a second, enjoying the smell of food permeating the room, when he saw it. It wasn't anything big, or that clear, and it probably wouldn't mean much to anyone else - but he saw it. A flash of amber and white, with the tail of a jacket swishing out of view from the doorframe. "Ah, hold on a second, do you mind?" He was out the door in a second, and sure enough, as he looked down the hallway, there he was.
"Travis!" The other boy stopped in his tracks, and paused, almost as if fearful to turn around. That might just have been the case, as he hesitated still when he turned. His eyes fell on Nic, but he didn't seem to relax at all. "Travis, come here, won't you?" Another hesitation, but soon Travis turned around and walked closer, seeming nervous as ever.
"…yeah?" He stopped a few feet away, even then, and he stared to the side of Nic rather than straight at him. When Nic tried to make their eyes meet, he had them for only a split second before Travis looked quickly away again.
"Why don't you come join me?" Nic asked, holding out his hand a little in a gesture of offering.
"I'm okay." The response was quick, almost too much so. Nic tried again.
"There's fresh cooked fish, much better than cafeteria food…" The shifter hesitated again, before shaking his head.
"I'm full," he insisted, taking a step back this time.
"Well, just for the company?" Was it so hard to reach out to a roommate?
"N-no thank you…" Apparently.. it was more difficult this year than last year, and last year had been difficult enough.

"Huh? Sure, no problem," he said, supposing Nic had to go take a piss or something. But then he heard voices outside the room and turned to look. Another person = awesome! He covered the fish again, turning the heat off so they wouldn't burn, and poked his head out of the room. "Oh, hey, is this a friend of yours, Nic? You should come in, man, I've got too much fish for two... Oh crap, I spilled something on my shirt..." he said with a pout. "C'mon, I've got to change and I don't wanna do it with the door open." He reached over nonchalantly and grabbed Travis' arm, pulling him into the room and closing the door.
He then traipsed over to his closet and entered, taking the shirt off and throwing it out of the closet and on to the bed. "Boo, I just want something comfy... Hey, Nic, check and make sure the fish isn't burning, will you?" he called out of the closet where he was examining a pink girl's polo and a similarly pink baby doll top.

"Huh- wha-?!" Poor Travis, he didn't stand a chance against the unstoppable force that Nic was quickly discovering was named Kari. The boy released the startled looking teen only after dragging him through the door and closing it, effectively trapping him for the time being. He then vanished into his closet, which Travis avoided even looking in the direction of. Actually he was spending most of his time just staring at his toes.
"Kari won't bite you, you know," Nic stated quietly as he checked the fish, poking it a little with the spatula.
"...s-sure, I know..." Nic couldn't help but notice that Travis seemed still in shock at the room and its apparent inhabitant - no wonder, really. There was so much pink in here. So much pink.
"Mmm. Fish looks great, Kari," he called so that he could be heard more as he put the lid back down. Travis still looked like he wanted to go die, but at least he wasn't flipping out. At least, not outside his head.

"Good! I'm Kari, by the way, Nic's-friend. Oh, goddamnit... Boys, don't look! I don't have a good top that goes with these shorts; I'mma have to change. Nic, keep an eye on the fish. And Nic's-friend, if you want there's another folding chair stashed under my bed. Fucking stockings augh."
There was a pause, some shuffling, and then "Oh man Nic, why didn't you tell me my hair looked that bad? Good lord, can you say FRIZZ?" A few minutes later he stepped back out of the closet, running a brush through his long pigtails. He was clad in another simple outfit, a jean skirt over pink stockings and a comfy pink t-shirt.
"How're we coming?" he asked, throwing the brush onto his bed and moving over to look at the fish, brushing past Travis on his way.

Travis had no idea what he was doing here. He'd just been walking, as he often did, towards his dorm. Quickly, uneventfully, trying to avoid too much contact with other students. With other people. Other people were dangerous, other people were a risk... he just wanted to shut himself up in his dungeon room where he belonged. Now, here he was, trapped in this... girl's room, which he didn't even understand. Wasn't this the boy's side? Did they mix them? He had no idea and frankly he didn't want to find out.
Travis wasn't moving again - sigh. Nic tried his best not to frown, though he couldn't quite help it and a little one snuck out. He followed Kari's directions to the folding chair, popping it open near Travis. He pushed down on the other boy's shoulder a little, ignoring the flinch it earned.
"Sit,", he said quietly, and was promptly ignored again. "You'll feel better." A rush of color filled his brain for a split second - pinkwhiteblack, blue staring at amber and back again, the hint of a smile on a familar face. "...I promise." The other boy hesitated still, looking unsure... but eventually he complied, sitting down. He still looked unable to process what was going on, and Nic didn't blame him, poor boy. It was like walking into an alternate dimension in here.
"Coming along fine!" Nic responded as Kari reemerged, his eyebrows raising just a little bit at the new outfit. Skirts and stalkings and more pink, huh? This boy went the whole nine yards. Nic had seen weirder things, sure, but it was still something he'd need to get used to... why was he talking like he'd be here often? One more glance at the nice cooking equipment and delicious-smelling food, and he knew that already.
Because he would be.
