There were lots of different times of the year that meant lots of different things to lots of different people. To Star Landvik, this time - Christmas time - was the best time.
Sure, she and Caleb might only have one tiny little room, but she'd done her best to make it festive. There was garland strung around the top, a completely ridiculous wreath hanging on the outside of their door, an equally ridiculous figure of a Nisse by the entrance ("It's tradition!" she'd insisted when Caleb had raised an eyebrow at her. He didn't seem to quite get it, but that was Americans for you! They had weird holiday traditions that didn't involve animal-guarding gnomes at all. How strange!), some lights around the window, and even a tiny, red-ribboned sprig of mistletoe hanging right inside the door, which Caleb had been skillfully ducking around ever since it had been put up. Drat.
As pretty as even their tree was, which was teeny and sitting on their lone table and mostly decorated by her (bizarre) straw julbukk, or goats, that still wasn't what had Star's focus tonight, on Christmas Eve of all nights. Nope, what had her focus was the little package on the table by the tree - since, after all, nothing was gonna fit under that tree.
She had taken forever, and she meant FOR-EV-ER, to think of just the right gift for Caleb. Their first Christmas as a team, things had still been pretty rocky, since they'd just barely teamed up. She'd gotten him a little card and called it good, since she didn't know what else to do. This year though… THIS year…
The package was relatively unimpressive on the outside, only about 5 inches across and maybe 7 inches long, and barely over an inch thick. It was wrapped in cheap silver paper with a gold bow, and had mysteriously appeared only days before, since it had really taken Star that long to think of this one! But it was perfect, she was sure - absolutely perfect.
There wasn't much going on this Christmas Eve. A lot of the students were in dorms, some for dorm gatherings and others just tucked away in their own for a quiet eve. For her and Caleb, it was a relatively quiet one. It was after dark, and she had the tree and window lights on and a couple candles lit, so that it was plenty bright without killing the 'spirit' of things. Caleb was out doing an extra patrol, because the boy never knew when to stop working.
"There won't be any trouble on Christmas Eve!" she'd insisted, but he'd still been antsy and off he'd gone. At least he'd be back soon, she reassured herself. She took the time to debate if she wanted to convince him to exchange gifts tonight, instead of in the morning - she really couldn't wait, it was positively killing her.
(Whoops, bad wording. Good thing that was just in her head, huh? She had to quit with the faux pas already, but they just kept falling out of her mouth…)
