The sun shone brightly as it desended behind the horizon, leaving a trail of many colors throughout the sky. A shadowy figure walked along the dirt path. They were alone and seemed to be watching their surroundings like they were afraid of something. She was. She was afraid of them. She knew they were looking for her and she was determined not to be found. Whenever she heard a suspicious noise or saw something in the shadows she walked a bit faster until she was a good distance away from whatever it was. She almost looked paranoid.
Strange. I haven't seen anybody for the past few hours. It's late, but there's usually someone out here. Hitojita thought to herself. She scanned the area again and sighed. This was frustrating. Always running, always looking over her shoulder to make sure she hadn't been found. She also couldn't tell many people much about herself. Not that she would spill out her whole life to a stranger before, but the past few years had made her very secretive. An image suddenly came up in her mind. One of him, her...master or as far as she was concerned, ex-master.

She wasn't sure where she was going. She twisted through the shadows, flickering through the astral and physical planes. She could never keep in the astral realm entirely for too long - some visage of herself had to be on the lower plane. Deep amber-like eyes watched the surroundings, and she let loose a low, inhuman hiss. She had never been here before, and that made her nervous. Nervous made her fearful, and fear turned her aggressive when pushed. She grumbled something in her mind, twisting about in shadow and thoughts.
She didn't look entirely human - or at least not like a healthy one. She was thin, a little too thin, with sharp features and long limbs. She was able to keep her appearance closer to the 'average' human male thanks to her Astral parts, but when alone... too much effort, too hard. She didn't want to pretend to be what she was not. We don't need anyone else, she thought smugly, before it wore off into irritation. He was there again, clinging to her conscious like a scared child. She shook him off, and he retreated mournfully into nothingness once more.
She twisted herself further through the shadows, form flickering along with with them. Soon enough, she could sense it. But what, WHAT was it that she was sensing? Her dragon-like curiosity perked, and it urged her to go see. Go, go! it seemed to cry. She fought it, twisting back a pace. It could not last long, however. Instinct won over caution. It always won, controlling her like a puppet. She was a slave to instinct.

It had started to grow darker, though the boy barely noticed from his position beneath a partially caved in roof. He stood facing a wall, both hands spread out to feel, nose barely touching its cool surface. Smelled like earth. He liked it.
What was this thing called? It was not "earth" - earth was dirt and mud and grass. It was a wall, he knew, but the material was strange. Dark red and rough to the touch, separated into sections by smooth gray lines. It was something he knew he'd felt before, but he had forgotten to write it down. The blue-haired boy pressed his forehead to the wall and closed his eyes, partially from shame, partially from fatigue. How long had the trip been? It felt like forever, but he knew that couldn't be right. There had been that nice lady in the last town who had showed him the thing called "marketplace"... Makena knew he had met her before he left, so forever ago did not make sense. Perhaps she was just from one of the other times. The ones he sometimes remembered, but could not understand... but he understood her perfectly, did he not? So that did not make sense either.
He sighed and pulled the heavy dark cloak tighter around his thin shoulders. Once the sun set all the way it would be time to find a place to sleep, but he didn't want to leave the wall yet. He would wait until it got a little darker...

Hitojita looked around again suddenly. She felt like there was another precense not far away from her. She walked a bit faster, hoping to escape the precense. She looked into the dense forest on her left. It was full of shadows where someone or something could hide and wait. It was so different from the open grass on her right. It was bright and you could see out for quite a ways. That errie feeling wouldn't leave her alone and she walked a little faster. She hoped it wasn't them.
Hitojita narrowed her eyes and focused on the road ahead of her. There was a crossroad not far ahead. Next to it were some ruins. Maybe that would be a good place to rest. she thought and headed towards them. Maybe if she was lucky she would escape that wierd feeling. Once she was next to the ruins she saw they were made of red bricks and wood. Parts of the roof were still intact and so were some of the walls. This must have been a nice place at some point in time. she thought as she looked at it. After a moment of wandering she went over to a wall and slid down with her back against it. She turned her head down so the hood she was wearing would cover most of her face. After that she slowly slipped into thinking about her day.

She dug her fingers into the bark of a tree, debating. She hesitated to go any closer to the strange life-force, and yet the instinct still pulled. What was is, why was it here? She tilted her head, opening her mouth just slightly to try and get a better scent from the wind... nothing. She'd have to run half-blind if she went any closer, and the wind was shifting. She would have the dis-advantage. Maybe it would be better to wait.
Wait for what? she argued with herself. They'll notice if you continue to follow. They would have no reason to stop any time soon. You'll lose them before you learn anything. She cursed gently as she reasoned it out, relenting. It was safety, caution, and control, versus blunt curiosity in the face of danger. Come on, you faced worse than this for hundreds of years... before... Her gaze clouded with confusion, and she shook her head slowly. Hundreds of years. Had she...? She just.. couldn't remember. There was a film over her past lives, one that she could not penetrate. It was frustrating at times, like a curse - but that curse was also a blessing. One cannot truly mourn for what they do not remember.
She waited for several moments, unable to decide as the urge to follow tugged at her reluctant body. She paced in her small spot for a moment, peering out onto the empty path in an attempt to see further than even her sharp eyes could manage. What really held her back was no urge of self-preservation; her own life meant nothing to her anymore; but fear of discovery. She refused to be dragged back to the hell-hole where she'd been born. She was no toy to magic and science. She was as living and breathing as anyone else in the whole damn world, no matter what she was - no matter how wrong or sick, or twisted a being she was... didn't she still deserve to live?

Makena stayed with his cheek to the wall for a while longer, eyes closed. Every now and then he would start to drift off into sleep, slowly swaying forward on to his toes, only to jerk back into full consciousness in time to catch himself from falling. He knew he had to find a place to settle for the night.
"Fine, I will sleep..." He didn't know who he was talking to, but it somehow felt important that he announce himself. "Where shall I sleep?" Wind rustled the branches of the trees nearby and he started to wander the strange place, looking for a suitable spot.
He was surprised to find a hooded someone leaning against one wall. She... he... it must have been very quiet to arrive without him knowing. Makena didn't know what he was, but he'd gathered enough information to know that he had better hearing than many. Perhaps... perhaps this person just had even better hearing than he! Of course! Finally, something that made sense!
"Excuse me, are you awake?" He crouched so they would be at the same eye level, eager gaze never leaving the hooded figure. "I hope I'm not disturbing anything..."

Hitojita had been sitting there against the wall, slowly slipping into sleep as she thought. She had just nodded off when she heard someone approaching. She heard the footsteps come closer and close until they stopped in front of her. Whoever it was crouched dwon in front of her and asked if she was awake. She didn't move for a moment. Then she lifted her head partially. Firey red-orange eyes looked out from the shadow of her hood. She saw a teenage-looking boy with medium blue hair. His dark blue eyes seemed to watch her eagerly, waiting for an answer.
"I am now. Who are you?" Hitojita asked quietly, her voice a bit rough from little use. She hadn't spoken very much lately. There was nobody to talk to really. She blinked and studied the boy. What was someone like him doing way out here in the middle of nowhere? Could she trust him? He looked safe enough. Hm, she'd wait and see what he was like before she judged him. She sat there, moitionless, waiting for him to speak again.

Her eyes were rather striking. Was that a normal human color? He had never seen it before, and he had seen a lot of humans...
"I am..." He faltered. Who was he? Makena wasn't sure that he knew the answer. With a gentle thump, he sat down next to her and tried to think. Did she mean his name? He leaned in and looked at her again, expression questioning.
"...My name is Makena, if that is what you mean." Thoughtful, he went on. "If 'who' I am refers to more than just my name, then I suppose I am lost as well." A friendly smile. "So who are you?"

Hitojita watched Makena. He seemed to be looking at her eyes. Heh. They weren't a normal color and he knew it. It didn't seem to bother him though. When he answered he seemed a bit confused about what to say. He was different, that was obvious. She continued to watch him as he sat down next to her against the wall. He asked who she was in return. She hesitated for a few moments and then replied.
"My name is Hitojita. What are you doing way out here? Don't you have a family or at least someone to stay with or are you a traveler?" She asked. She kept eye contact with him. Her expression was a bit curious, but she was sure some unease and fear managed to work its way to the surface where it could be seen.

"Hi-to-ji-ta..." Makena repeated, carefully sounding out each syllable. A good name. He liked the sound of it.
Her next question confused him. What was he doing out here? He didn't know. Staying in one place simply didn't feel right. Too much time in one particular town always made him restless, uneasy... with another look at her face, he realized with some surprise that Hitojita was very much the same way at the moment. Was something wrong...?
"Suppose I'm a traveler," he answered, bringing his knees to his chest and resting his chin on his folded arms. He didn't want her to be nervous. Perhaps it was because he was a stranger, which he figured was understandable. Roads at night were sometimes dangerous. More so for females, people said, though nobody ever told Makena why. It didn't seem like it would make any difference... he shook it off. The answer to that one would be found eventually, but it wasn't important now.
"But... what is a 'family'?" He tilted his head to one side, eyes wide. "I have never heard that term before."

Hitojita watched Makena sound out each syllable to her name. THen he commented that he liked it. She smiled for a moment. He didn't seem like a bad person. Then her expression fell back into usease once again. He had fallen silent. He seemed to be thinking about something, probably her other questions. He said that he was a traveler. She had figured. He kinda looked like he was used to traveling alone. His next question caught her off guard though. What was a family? He'd never heard of the word before? Her expression became confused and then she answered.
"You've never heard of a family before? Hm...well, a family is a group of people. Most of the time they are related by blood. Sometimes they are not though. Ther is usually a father, mother, and sometimes children. Brothers and sisters. They usually live together." Hitojita explained. Where were this boy's parents? Was he abandoned when he was young? Or did he just live out in the middle of nowhere his whole life? Maybe he lost his memory. Hm. He was quite and interesting boy.

Makena tilted his head in the other direction, blinking at her. A family... her description sounded vaguely familiar, but he couldn't recall ever having such a thing. Quickly, he reached into the folds of his cloak for his book and pen, opening it to a new page and jotting down what she'd said.
"Is it a good thing?" He continued to question her as he wrote. "A common thing?" There were people that lived together, he knew, but he had never heard the word for it before. It sounded sort of nice. He wondered if those people with families ever felt as if they didn't belong someplace, like he did... what was the word for it? 'Home'... such a strange concept. It was difficult to relate to. Difficult to believe, he supposed.
Hitojita seemed to know a lot about things. Makena was certain he would have other questions for her, if he ever remembered them.

Hitojita saw that Makena seemed to be understanding her a bit better, but he also looked like he was still unsure. She watched him pull out a book and pen and then begin writing in it. Then he asked her if it was a good thing, a common thing. He seemed to be thinking about something as he wrote in his book. Perhaps about families, maybe his?
"Hm, well I think it's a good thing. But it may depend on who you ask. Not everyone has great families. They are quite common though." She answered. Then she fell silent for a bit, staring off into space. She thought about her own family. She wondered if they were still safe or if they had to move again. Things were so complicated fro her race because they were rare and few in number. She paused for a moment and then looked back at Makena again.
"....So, do you have a family? Or have you been alone for your whole life?" She finally asked softly, hesitantly. She hoped nothing horrible had happened.Memories of her own family swirled within her eyes.

She felt vulnerable, too vulnerable. She shivered gently, pushing back the fear that was beginning to leech slowly through her system. She would not be afraid of these ones, she would not! They were nothing to fear it seemed, that much she was beginning to be certain of. She'd watched and listened, moving slowly closer and growing slowly blinder as she moved around the wind. It blew at an angle for the moment, keeping her scent just to the side of the strangers. If either of them had stronger enough senses, however... the tiniest shift in the wind could reveal her. She'd have to be ready to run.
She dug her fingers into the bark of the tree that shielded her, hissing gently. Something wailed in the back of her mind at that word - family. She'd learned the concept, and it made her sick deep inside. Not because of some hate of love, or despise of commitment... but because some part of her WANTED that. Sought the love and affection that came with it. Emotions so foreign, they hardly seemed real. What did it feel like, she wondered... what did it feel like to love? To be loved? Could a group of beings really care for each other as much as people said..?
Her dark eyes narrowed, and she hissed louder despite herself. PAH! She could not want something like that, she should DIE before she wanted love. Never, such a thing could never happen. It was fake, all fake! Love is fake. She had been given no love, no compassion, nothing! She was given nothing but the chains in her neck and the stakes through her wings. She WAS nothing! She didn't even have a proper name. All she had was a number, that wretched number that she could never escape. 24-8. That was who she was, she could never escape that. A bastard creature that ought never to have existed- that was all she knew herself as.
That was all she had ever been told.

Makena stared at her for a few moments, his expression blank and unreadable. He did not have a family... at least, not one that he could remember.
"No... no family," he said, tucking the diary away inside his cloak. "But I would not say that I am alone." With a glance to the ever-darkening sky, he smiled. "The sky is good company, is it not?" The sky was one of his favorite things. A pretty word, too - not one that he would forget.
He looked at Hitojita again and frowned slightly. She seemed vaguely... sad? That was his guess, but Makena wasn't very familiar with such things. He hoped it wasn't because of something he'd said.
"So... you are a traveler, too?" A shift of subject seemed to be best now, since he could not answer her questions thoroughly. "What are you doing here?"
