Hitojita's face lit up for a second when she saw the crow. Another one....of her kind, in a way. Then she let her face fall back into a serious mask. Her kind....she missed them. She shook her head slightly to chase the memories away. She didn't need to be thinking about that right now. Instead she thought about the name the stranger had chosen. Crow. It fit.
"That name sounds great Crow. Welcome to the group." Hitojita said in a friendly way. She smiled a bit, though it was sort of sad if you were looking close enough. There was also a faraway look in her eyes, as if she was remembering somthing.

What was with these two? She eyed them, a little nervous, and folded her arms across her chest. Did the boy ever stop having that gleeful look in his face, and what of the strange girl? Her scent was of mountain ash and clean feathers - it was unfamiliar to her. There were all matters of creature in this world, and there were some that she would rather avoid. Neither of these two seemed threatening, surely, but it wasn't the outside she was worried about. No matter how friendly, she'd keep her ground... she had no doubts that the boy could quite possibly be insane.
"My thanks." It was all she could really think to say. She'd not been very good with people these past years. They made her... uncomfortable, to put it lightly. She didn't think it would change any time soon, either.

Their new companion seemed tense. It was only natural, he supposed. Maybe it was a little suspicious that two complete strangers would be so friendly, and maybe it was a little suspicious that Crow had agreed, but that sort of thing rarely crossed Makena's mind-- and only fleetingly on the seldom few moments that it did. All that mattered was that he had made a friend. Of course, the sky and the ground and the trees were his friends, too, but they didn't talk often, and he didn't understand much of it when they did. The words got all twisty and echoed in his mind, and they always left him feeling very tired, so much so that he would fall asleep and find himself unable to remember any of what they had said the day before.
"Our welcomes! And speaking of names, you may call me Makena." The boy bowed low like he'd seen rich men do before, though his tone was far from formal, and his arms stretched outwards as if to keep his balance. It looked like a mockery of the gesture more than anything else. He straightened up and shook the hair out of his eyes with a toss of his head. "So now we are acquainted-- is it time for sleep yet, or did you have other plans tonight?"

Hitojita watched Makena and Crow interact. Crow eyed both Makena and her warily. She couldn't really blame Crow though. They were strangers. She would act much in the same way too if she had just joined a group of strangers. She kind of felt nervous now that she thought about it. All of them had met each other in one evening and now they were all going to travel together. It had all happened very fast.
Hitojita was brought out of her thoughts by Makena's question. She smiled at the boy.
"I have no problem with stopping to sleep for the night. What do you say Crow?" Hitojita asked, looking at Crow with a questioning look.

Sleep? Now? ...hmm. She'd forgotten to take that into account. The way other traveled at day, slept at night. She had always taken more to the shadows, waking as the sun departed and finding a place to hide for the night as it rose again the next morning. Why, she'd only risen for this day's travel a short time ago. This would be a problem, then.. but she'd have to face it if her plan were to work. The sun hurt her eyes, even at evening, after so long underground and traveling at night. How would she ever see at noon day? It would be impossible... she could only hope any attack that came would not be then. She would surely have no hope of escaping in the bright, burning sun.
"...if we must, it cannot be helped, can it?" She would have to explain herself that way. After so long in the shadows, tomorrow would be trying at best. She should have thought things through.. perhaps she should slither away in the night, like a phantom that had never been there. Perhaps they would assume they had imagined her. Many others found that easier to accept, it seemed, than having met some strange, twisted being such as herself. It was a possibility, certainly... "I will stay up and watch. I cannot sleep so early in the night."

"If you say so," Makena replied, spinning around to face the ruins. He raised a finger and glanced over his shoulder at Crow, showing just a little caution. "But we haven't any money, so if you're planning to rob us, you shouldn't waste your time." Had Hitojita any money of her own? He had no idea. "Not that I think you are - you could've just waited until we fell asleep ourselves instead of saying hello, couldn't you? So of course you aren't." He began to walk towards the ruins, arms reaching out to his sides, seemingly for balance again. "Sorry! I don't mean to sound suspicious... you're welcome here, of course."

Hitojita watched as Crow seemed to contemplate the question. The answer she reciveved seemed a bit odd to her though until Crow added on the last part about not being able to sleep so early. She still thought it was a bit of an odd answer and as Makena voiced his thoughts about Crow possibly being a theif she considered that, but when he made his deduction that Crow would have waited if she was intending to rob them she silently agreed. It was true, she had money and a few valuables but nothing else really. She never kept much because she was always moving, always running away. She followed Makena as he headed back down towards the ruins. That would be a safer place to rest for the night.
After they reached the ruins Hitojita found a nice shadowy spot and settled down. She pulled her hood up over her head so that her face was a mystery to strangers once again. She mumbled a good night to the other two and then slipped into her thoughts. A lot had happened in a short amount of time. She had gained two more members and they had sort of established a traveling group. From under her hood she watched the others curiously to see what they would do and to assure herself she was still safe before she went to sleep.

Rob them? Ha. They knew so little of her, she couldn't help but allow a tiny grin to seep onto her face. Money was no item to her - she had never purchased anything in her life. She was a thief in her own right, but she had never touched money. Good alone interested her, and by 'goods' she mostly meant food. She took what she could find, slinking around in the shadows of stalls, snitching produce and robbing the meat markets of their... finer cuts, right beneath their noses. She was primal in that way, she supposed. Scavenging off others like a wild dog, or, much to her further amusement, as a crow. She really was one of them, wasn't she? She certainly related to her feathered namesake more than the two strangers that accompanied her now...
"You can trust me when I say," she answered after a moment, that tone of amusement still managing to creep into her voice. "I have no plans whatsoever to take any money from either of you. It is of no interest to me to begin with." With a shrug of her shoulders, she followed them down to the ruins. As they arrived, she stood, watching them for a moment. Hitojita soon slipped a hood over her face, and Makena had his back turned for a moment. It was then that she slipped around the side of the wall, and vanished. She reappeared atop one nearby, in what seemed to only be a second. She perched there, sharp eyes flicking about, her mind as wary as her senses. She would take watch for the beginning of the night, at least. She would have to sleep some later, if she was to travel in the daylight... no matter how much sleep, she did not look forward to the reappearance of the sun.

"Okay," Makena said, and he believed her. He moved nearer to Hitojita, though not too close, and laid down on the ground with his cloak wrapped around his shoulders. "Good night," he added like he'd been taught, though he didn't feel like sleep quite yet. It was better to be quiet, so he wouldn't wake Hitojita or distract Crow... that wouldn't be very kind. He kept his eyes on the sky for now, silently tracing patterns in the stars.
It smelled good here. Like earth... little tendrils of darkness crept into his vision, and his eyes slowly slid shut. The ruins were perfumed with smells of earth and grass and cold, wet stone. It all felt very familiar, except something was missing. Makena couldn't put his finger on it, and now he was too tired to try. He fell asleep to tiny knowing whispers in his ear, full of comforts and memories... but come morning, he would forget them again. He always did.

Hitojita's eyes opened as she was woken from her half-asleep stupor by Makena's "Good night." She lifted her head up slightly to look at him, hoping he wouldn't notice her staring. She noticed he was laying not very far away from her, but far away enough so he did seem too close. He seemed like he was deep in thought and then a few minutes later she heard his breathing become heavy. He had drifted off. Hitojita smiled slightly. Makena didn't seem like a bad kid. Perhaps he could be trusted a bit more? She shook her head at this thought. She couldn't trust anyone so quickly. They could be working for him and could be acting nice to lull her into a state of false security. A grim look replaced her smile. SHe wished she could trust others, but it was harder after what had happened to her. She sighed quietly.
As she kept thinking Hitojita scanned the immediate area and realized Crow was nowhere to be seen. Had they left to a different part of the ruins or left them enitrely? She closed her eyes and focused on finding Crow's aura. There it was, on top of a nearby wall. Hitojita relaxed and wondered why she hadn't noticed that she had become tense. Then she dismissed the thoguht and let her mind wander until sleep overcame again and she escaped to the world of unconsiousness.

The morning came slowly for Crow. The entire night, as the stars and moon shone above, she was in turmoil. So many things came to her, told her that she was being stupid. 'You're staying in one place too long, you must move!' 'Stay, stay, the night's not too long now. You're safer with them.' 'They cannot protect you, flee now, while you can!' It was back and forth, tugging her to stay and pushing her to go. She tried to force herself to rest at some point, get some sleep before the next day's travel, but she couldn't seem to manage it. She moved up, down, across the wall. She twisted around, trying to do anything to exhuast herself, or at least calm her frantic mind.
There was no relief until close to morning. So exhausted by her conflict, she settled down at the corner of the wall... as the first rays of sun crept over the distant hills. Her muddled eyes blinked, and she shielded herself with a low hiss. Today... would not be pleasant. She just hoped she could survive it.

Sun hit Makena's face and he sat bolt upright, his back straight as a board. Last night's dream had been an odd one; he'd been surrounded by hard red earth walls, and watched by something that loomed over him constantly - "master". Whatever that was.
"Good morning!" He grinned and shook off the dream's strangeness, more than used to that sort of thing by now. Sometimes the dreams were all he could remember, and he'd go like that for a little while before finding his book and reminding himself of all the other important things. Oh, speaking of which...
Immediately, he began to rummage around in the folds of his cloak, and withdrew his leather-bound little diary. He opened it to the last page: "FAMILY - group live together, blood, but sometimes not. common. good but sometimes not." Now Makena remembered. He looked up from his book to Crow and smiled.
"Hey," he said, pointing to the wall behind Crow's head. "What is that red stone called?"

She would like have noticed his awakening if not for that wretched dawn-light. Ugh, morning... she should have already been holed up somewhere. She felt him soon enough, however, radiating waves of positive emotion. While not as sensitive to it as a Mazoku, she wouldn't say that the slight sensation she got from it was entirely pleasant. She growled lowly and tried to bury her head further into her curled up little ball, but to no avail. She could still see the dawn, and she could still hear him. Great... why had she agreed to this in the first place again?
She shook her head, blinking over at him, and then back around behind her. She was silent for a moment, staring at the wall. "...it's brick." She left it at that, her head sinking back down. Her stomach gave a weak growl, further adding to her lack of energy. She was starving. She'd not had the will to hunt last night, and they weren't close enough to anywhere for her to steal anything. She thought of Makena, and scowled at the ground. She certainly wasn't going to get any energy from his emotions... god. At least she could run on empty for longer than a human.. of course, it had been a couple days since she'd had a decent meal in the first place. Not the best timing for her.

"Brick," he repeated, over-emphasizing the sound of the word to soften it up in his mouth. He quickly copied it down in his book in the space below 'family'. "Rough red stones. I think I like brick. Do you like brick, Crow? I think I like brick..."
Crow's stomach grumbled, and Makena was reminded of another thing. Food was important - where could he find some? He raised his head slightly, smelling the air. It was all damp earth and foliage - his ordinary nose couldn't pick out anything further. Quietly, he bit his lip and closed his eyes, listening. His sense of hearing was rather average, but he didn't really listen with his ears, anyway...
A distant rumble - a herd of something? Too big... rustling branches and melodic chirps sounded nearby, but birds were too much work to catch. He tried to listen deeper, feeling out the terrain surrounding them. Earth earth and more earth, moist still in the deeper parts, wood, stone - and then there it was, bubbling and babbling along not far from the ruins at all.
"Ah!" His eyes snapped open and he looked at Crow again, questioning. "Do you like fish?"

...this guy had to have some kind of problem. She listened to him ramble on about brick, biting back her own response. She could just picture it... 'Oh yes, I just love brick - I especially love throwing it hard at people's heads. Here, watch while I demonstrate!' ..but that would be an overreaction, now wouldn't it? She'd gotten better at human culture since she'd first started out. Such a high temper, she'd discovered, was an easy give away just how inhuman she was. When she lost her temper, she let things... slip, much more easily. She had to keep in control, keep from... her thought track rolled off course as what Crow found to be possibly the most annoying human in creation, if that was indeed what he was, spoke again.
Fish? Oh for the love of God! This just was NOT going to stop, was it? Peering up with annoyed eyes, she stared at him with her quite clear 'What the hell?' expression for a moment before answering. "... I suppose so?" Her gaze narrowed, skin still prickling with the sensation of his good mood. "Do I dare to ask why?"
