The hug took Makena by surprise, but he returned it all the same. Physical affection was a foreign concept to him; he wasn't sure why he liked it, but he did. Little things, human things, he didn't understand them. Needed them, though. He needed them.
Everything had turned so confusing after he woke up... just a few years ago, really, though in his mind it felt shorter.
Hitojita's question was confusing as well, and he wasn't sure how to answer. He knew what it was she wanted to hear - that he would run and leave her, save himself, as this "master" would likely take him too. Kill him, maybe, though he still didn't fully grasp the idea of death. He also knew what it was he wanted to do - stay with her no matter what, so she wouldn't have to face the master alone. He'd known her for less than a day, but even so, he would-not could-not could never leave her to that fate. Friends were so, so rare here. Not like before.
"I promise." His voice was a whisper to match hers. Good thing, too; if it were any louder it might give him away.
Lying was another concept he'd never quite grasped before, but he understood now. He understood perfectly.

Hitojita could sense Makena had been surprised by the hug, but seemed to enjoy it none the less. After a small silence "I promise." was his answer. She thought she sensed some indecision, but he sounded like he meant it so she tossed the thought away. He seemed like an honest kid so she wouldn't worry about it.
She released Makena and stood back a few steps. She let her gaze drift around for a little bit until it landed on the flat rock that had the three fish they had caught on it. Three fish...that wouldn't hold them off for long. They needed more, probably two for each person at least.
"Well, I think we're going to need more fish. Don't you?" She asked, trying to break the silence and possibly lighten the mood. She waded away from Makena and back to the spot she was previously. Then she froze again like the last time, staring intently at the water. Everything was quiet for a minute, only the sound of the river rushing by, and then she struck again. Her hands plunged into the water like talons again and brought out two more writhing fish. She quickly dispatched them with her knife and brought them back to the flat rock. She turned back to Makena and smiled.

Makena breathed a silent sigh of relief when she seemed to believe it - good. They would cross that bridge if they came to it, and he dearly hoped they wouldn't. He released Hitojita as well, a little more reluctant than she, and stood back to watch as she caught them two more fish. She really was good at this. Once again he waded into the deeper parts of the river, intent on finishing their catch of the day. Two fish each ought to be enough, right? Quick as a flash he grabbed another one, slightly larger than the first one he'd caught. "We're good at this!" He turned to her, all his seriousness from the previous moment gone. He slit the fish's throat and lay it down beside the others, looking rather proud of himself. "D'you think that's enough?

Hitojita watched Makena wade out again and then quickly snatch up a fish and slit its throat. It was a bit larger than the previous ones. Hitojita smiled as he commented on how good they were at fishing. When he came and put the fish down beside the others he asked if there was enough. She looked over at the pile and saw six fish on the rock. Two for each of them? Sounded good to her.
"Yeah. I think two fish will be enough for each of us. At least for the time being. Let's head back now." Hitojita said warmly and got out of the river. Then she moved over to where her discarded belongings were laying and put her boots and cape back on before returning to the rock.
Once there she picked up three of the six fish. Then she turned and started making her way back towards their 'camp'. She hoped Crow was in a better mood when they returned.

Makena took the other half of their catch, walking beside Hitojita with a bounce in his step. He was back to humming again; the tune was livelier than before, in time with the rhythm of their footsteps. Eventually they came upon their little campsite, if it could even be called that - it was marked only by the dark sleeping lump that was their other companion. Makena spread his cloak on the ground and laid their catch on top of it.
"Crow!" He threw his hands up in the air as if it would make the lump sit upright - really though, his voice alone was more than enough to do the job. "We have fish!"

Hitojita followed Makena back into the ruins that served as their camp. Crow seemed to still be sleeping, or at least they were probably until Makena came back. She had sensed some tension before from Crow when they were around Makena. She watched as Makena attempted to wake Crow up by throwing his hands up and announcing the presence of the fish. She set her fish down on his cloak besides the fish had already placed there. Now she was debating on a new topic in her mind. How would they get a fire going? She could make one, but that would risk her revealing her true self...
"Does anyone here know how to make a fire?" Hitojita asked with a curious tone in her voice. She would make one if she had to, but only if no one else knew how to make a fire.

She could feel him coming before she even heard him, loud as he was. She could feel his upbeat energy surging towards her in her half-awake state, and she hissed to herself in annoyance. God damn, was he never down for a even a second? She shifted as he came near, covering her ears. That happy humming was like taking nails to her brain... god, this was going to to be so much more difficult than she had imagined. She'd never thought a person's only mode could be 'Happy'. Growling all the while, she burrowed further into her arms when he first called, before finally shifting out of position to lift her head.
She blinked the light out of her eyes with a loud hiss, her mood foul as it ever was, and made no better by her chipper companion. She couldn't believe he would get so delightedly worked up over something as mundane as fish. Fish weren't even that good - they were either salty or bland, and they were hardly filling with no body to them in the slightest - but yet, here he was. All fished up. Remaining hunched over, she shifted again before looking up at him through the bangs that were getting too long for her taste.
"Yes," she said, rather monotonously. "I can see that you have fish." Her tone turned snappish at the end, and she turned her head away. She could see Hitojita to the side, and dropped her eyes again, focusing on anything else - a rock, a pebble, a twig - it was an instinct she had yet to forgive. The girl's question drudged up some further thoughts... she could certainly start a fire. Any golden dragon could breathe fire, but she wasn't about to give away what she was. No natural dragon looked like the form she now bore, after all... "..sorry. I'm no good with flames."

Crow was up - that was one more obstacle out of the way. Makena returned the snark with a cheerful grin, oblivious as ever.
"Oh! I think I might..." He reached into the folds of his clothing, feeling about for a moment before withdrawing a small box of matches. Triumphant, he held the box out before him, offering it to whoever would take it from him first. "Who wants to start it?" He certainly wouldn't - if there was anything in this world that could make him uneasy, it was fire. A necessary evil - under normal circumstances he likely would have made do with what edible plants he could find, but now that they were a group, they needed more.

Though her face didn't show it, Hitojita was disappointed when Crow said they were no good with flames. It didn't last long though because she saw the matches Makena pulled out from his clothes and a small smile formed on her face. He held them out for someone to take. She could sense some nervousness. Hitojita smiled and came forward to gently take the matches from Makena's hand. Then she moved away again and placed them in the pouch-like bag at her side. They needed wood and kindling now.
"Okay. We just need wood and kindling. I'll go get some from the woods over there." Hitojita said and gestured to the woods they had found Crow in. Then she turned and headed over to the woods, leaving Crow and Makena alone. She just hoped they would be okay since she still sensed some hostility towards Makena from Crow. She soon made it to the edge of the woods and disappeared from sight.

Huh, so the kid had matches - good for him. Solved a problem for once, put himself to some use. That was enough to satisfy Crow for the moment, even if his constant state of bliss did leave a bad taste in her mouth. She watched the short exchange between the two others with disinterest, eyes following Hitojita as she took the matches and began to move away. When the girl was far enough away for Crow's interest to completely vanish, her gaze dropped back down. She ran a hand through her short hair, disheveled and poorly trimmed, and rubbed at the top of her eye. Sleep still felt like a foreign thing to her - like something that didn't belong in her life. She didn't need it as much as other beings did, not being what she was, but it was still.. required, now. That bothered her quite often. She shouldn't be left vulnerable like that, and she hated that she had to be. At least this whole 'group' thing might solve that.
If it didn't rob her of her sanity first, of course.

It didn't take too long for Hitojita to find enough kindling and firewood. Around a half-hour later she came back with her arms full of wood, twigs, grass, and a few longer sticks. She dropped them in a place sheltered from any wind that might kick up in the ruins and separated them into separate piles. Then she went around the ruins and picked up broken pieces of bricks and made a fire pit.
She took out the matches from her pouch and set the grass in the center of the pit. She pulled out a match and struck it against the box a few times before it finally lit. She set the box down and carefully moved the small flame down to the grass, careful not to accidentally snuff it out by moving too fast. She lit the grass and tossed the match on top of it. Then she twisted to reach behind her and grabbed some twigs. She carefully placed them on the grass and after a bit there was a small fire flickering brightly in the pit. When she was sure the fire wouldn't go out she added a few pieces of wood to keep it going.
Once again, she twisted and this time she reached back and grabbed the longer sticks. Each had one end that was pointed, like it had been roughly and quickly sharpened. She handed one to Makena and one to Crow before reaching over to the fish-covered cloak and grabbing one. She speared it on the pointed end of her stick and held it over the fire, close enough to cook it but far enough so the greedy tongues of flames wouldn't be able to snatch it from her.
